Repurposed: Jam Jar & ESB bill = Fairy-dwelling

OK..this is more of a craft idea than a repurpose one but it uses mostly old stuff and is a great talking point with everyone who sees it.

Step 1- Capture a fairy. They are readily found at the end of the garden or in pound shops.
*It should be noted at this point that garden fairies are a protected species and can only be held captive for a maximun of one week. They should then be released back into the wild in accordance with the Wildlife Act 1954.
....By the way, if you should capture a leprechaun hang on to it as they are worth money.

Step two. You will need a jam jar or coffee jar, a piece of scrap material, a piece of cord (here I used a handle from a posh paper carrier bag)

Step Three. Type up and print this poem. (I did not write it-not that talented)

Step four. Pay your ESB bill and shred it. (Do not use a telephone bill as there is no heat in those and the noise keeps the fairies awake)

Place a bit of your shreddings in bottom of jar. Cut out poem and insert into jar. VERY carefully place the fairy into the jar. Place the circle of fabric over the top and secure with your cord....now...make a wish

These are my great-nieces Amber & Hazel. I recently won a photo competition with this picture of them and I called it "Fairies".

Your jam-jar idea is brilliant unapam, but my bigggg problem here is..... How do I get them into the jam-jar???

They are not very co-operative either. I guess I'll have to sneak up on them when they are sleeping lol.

I have some fairies on a stick that would do for this project too - I got them in a garden centre. I will definitely be trying it out.

As an alternative you could try this...print out this photo, trim around the edges of the two fairies, add wings and insert into jam jar.

Thanks for the info peasy, but for one reason or another I cant get the Jar so I'll just have to keep them tied to the tree in my garden till i find one big enough. Dont worry though - I'm giving them food and water and they're not complaining as much now.

Here's my attempt, i got the jar at the fete last week, colm bought me the fairy for mothers day & the rest of the bits were lying around. It's not as nice as unapams but i still love it and it was more or less free (50 cent for the jar!). Thanks for the idea unapam & don't worry, i'll let the fairy out in a few days!

I've been looking at home for Jars with a tight lids - I thought i might do a few of them too and leave them around the garden for decoration, They will be watertight so could be left outside - U can always go and release them after a few days and capture a few more.

the possibilities are endless as to what you might find at the bottom of the garden, fairies, elves, trolls,dragons, hey i've been thinking bout your fairies on a stick would they fit in those jars you use for storing pasta, or maybe you could do something with the large plastic mineral bottles !!!!

The fairies are just a fraction too big for the Jam or coffee jars - After you remove the stick of course. But yeah - the water bottle idea is good too. Ok on a mission now to find a nice plastic bottle that will fit them. lol

maybe your local shop will have an empty lollipop jar, they have lids, easier to put something into than a mineral bottle

hi, just 2 let u know ur idea "fairy in jar" super,,im always making bits an pieces,, i made 2 4 my nieces,,im also making 1 4 my daughters grave she was stillborn 5 yr ago,, ive changed sum of the words in the poem 2 suit..the word fairy is now angel, and heaven is a wonderful place and angels must be free.. To make 'reindeer food' at christmas time you would need some raw porridge, sugar, red and green food colouring and a jar. Colour some sugar red and some green by adding a couple of drops of colouring and mixing well. Then layer porridge oats, green sugar, white sugar, red sugar, etc until jar is full. Seal the top with cling film and then put a wee bit of Christmas fabric over it and secure with an elastic band. Then on the front of the jar put a wee poam and a picture of a reindeer. The poem should read 'sprinkle on the lawn tonight(Christmas Eve), the moon will make it shine so bright, Santas reindeers fly and roam, this will guide them to your home'. Small children really love this, it isn't harmful to any animal and we sell loads of it at our Christmas Fair.

The Cow and Gate baby food jars would be perfect because the food containing meat the lid is red and the food containing veg the lid is green so would be colourful, only thing is - they're glass
