Can anyone help? Someone has walked both tar and oil into the house. Before I try to tackle it I would like to get advice. You know sometimes if you use the wrong thing on a stain it can make things worse.

Has anyone had success removing both tar and oil from carpets and wooden stairs? What did you find works best?

Thanks in advance. Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,

If you don't like the idea of using harsh chemicals in your house, especially on the carpet where the smell can linger for days depending on how much tar you have to remove.

There is a simple natural remedy.................good old fashioned butter which you massage into the stain and wipe off with kitchen towel or a cloth if you're being especially environmentally friendly.

As for the stains on the timber stairs , again good old fashioned butter.

Be sure to wash off any remaining residue of butter from the stairs as you don't want to create a hazzard.

Somebody had a thread on here looking to remove soot from a carpet forget carpet shampoo or any carpet cleaning solutions you can't get better than washing up liquid.

Lastly for general cleaning of marks on carpet or furniture you can't get better than any of the liquid laundry detergents, apply neat to the small area you want to clean and use a sponge or cloth to work well into the stain and wipe with a clean cloth.

For anybody trying theseor any household tips that you might receive always test an area that can't be seen easily.

There ya have my tuppence ha'penny worth.

Regards,

Fries.

i have a thread on here about soot on a carpet. i got loads of advice. but in the end i found the best thing was just ordinary baking soda in a drop of warm water. just keep dabbing it with a clean cloth and there you go!
