Land Ahoy! (Any land-use tips?)

Hi there all,

i have some land in co leitrim, its on a slope and slightly marshy as is most leitrim land. it is also near the top of a mountain (not the highest around)...
My problem is i need to find a use for this land and am looking for ideas???
preferably that dont cost a lot or nothing at all...

land is split in 2 and 1st part is having a house built on it (eventually lol)...
theres roughly 3/4 to 1 acre not being used....

also need tractor if anyone knows of one going...

Alotment
You could take a nominal fee for a patch of the land, and put the money towards enclosing it for privacy reasons.

Or you could ask the people who use it as an alotment to pay you in kind if they grow veg, fruit or plants on it?

You could do what we did. Planted it with various types of alder and ash to create our very own source of timber for the wood burning stove that heats our house and water. In about eight years time we'll be totally self sufficient for fuel. The alder in particular loves soggy ground and both are good to burn.
In the meantime, about ten years, you could learn how to coppice them properly so that you're not just cutting them down but helping them grow.

I have similar land - also in Leitrim. I love the idea of someone growing fruit and veg on it and sharing the harvest with me. I wonder if anyone would be interested in doing that. Or do all the locals have land of their own and not need my bit for an allotment? Great idea though.

hey there unapam... what part you in??? im near ballinamore.... its lovely up there, only for work id be living there i love it.... i doubt youd get anyone to rent/share alotment as all locals ive met have own land... but hey ya never know till ya try your look... wonder how many others on JT have houses/sites up that way....trying to come up with a good idea to make land pay for its self.....

bubbles2..... there are houses close by... not that close though..... cant see from pics.... still far enough away to have peace and quiet ahhhh blisssssss
its great on a clear night can see thousands of stars, never seen as many in dublin....
also can see 5 diffrent countys on a clear day...... as soon as i saw the view i knew it was for me!!!! awwwwwww

I don't know if it is something that would interest you but if it really wet you could dig out a pond that should fill naturally. In time you could get your own wildlife such as wild ducks and swans landing there!

Have to say i love Leitrim stay quite a bit up there in Swan island maybe you do be in the pub and we don't even know one another good luck with the land if you get a chance you should open a camp site what a lovely place it would be to wake up and the views you have

Goats will eat it all for you, and turn it into milk, cheese, etc for you.
Pigs will turn it over and get rid of the rushes and then you can plant it
Sheep will just stay out there and mind it for you with a hair cut and nail care once a year

Trees are fine if they like the wet, if you are going for an orchard drainage will be necessery.

Firewood, sycamre and Ash are good and reasonably tollerent of the wet, Birch likes the wet but does not burn well.

Raspberries and blackcurrents will love it as will gooseberries - thoug dont combine them with the goats.
