Shelves become a cupboard.

I had a row of switches and timers for the central heating on the kitchen wall and was on the lookout for something to cover them. A friend was getting rid of some items and I took a small set of shelves to re-purpose. First I had to remove half of the back so the switches could come through. Then I fixed it to the wall. The question now was 'where do I get doors small enough to cover the middle section?' I wandered around the house with 'that look' as my family call it, looking for inspiration. Found two picture frames that I got for free at a carboot sale. Took out the old pictures, framed a piece of my kitchen curtain in each, added piano hinge and voila..two doors. They hide the electrics and give me a little space for bits and pieces. I have been repurposing, making and doing all my life. People used to think I was mad but thanks to JT I feel like part of a big, creative family. Am working on a brass fuel box that I picked up in the recycling centre this morning. Will post before & after pics soon. Eibh.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement. I have been doing stuff like this all my life, sewing, and knitting, curtain & cushion making, patchwork etc. etc. Basically whatever I need ,I fix, make, re-use and only buy as a last resort. Eibh.

wow

well that is what i call a fantastic idea, u turned something unuseful into something practical
now u have me started, i have a small trolly here u know the ones where you put bottles of wine on its been annoying me for years and yet i kept it, maybe if i take the wheels off screw it to teh wall it ll be another press mmm but how do i close teh sides and make doors for the front ? maybe u have an idea for me !

Off your trolley Lol!!

Hi Amelies, to turn a trolley into a press? you have the start of it done already--take off wheels, attach to wall with D brackets. To fill in sides-a few options , fill from the inside as the framework of the trolley will be a natural frame and also hide any wobbly edges. Cut 2 pieses of light plywood or whatever you have. These can be tacked on with panel pins from the inside. Before you attach them you can 1. paint wood to match decor of room, 2 stain wood same colour as trolley, 3 paper panels with wallpaper from room or other offcuts, 4 cover panels with a material of your choice. You now have a cupboard with three sides. For the front you could repurpose old doors from kitchen or elsewhere, find two same size picture frames as I did and attach, or leave open as a book shelf etc. You could also work on the top. Lots of these trollies have a raised edge on 3 0r 4 sides. you could tile the top with some small tiles, mosaic, stones, crystals etc for a truly unique look. Happy crafting,
Eibh
