JumbleTown's "Accidental Gallery"

Background to JumbleTown's "Accidental Gallery"

It all started back in August, 2008. JumbleTowner LeLapin posted an item called 'Giant Hair Clip' in the Miscellaneous forum. She took a photograph of the 10cm turquoise hair-clip with her camera-phone and uploaded it. To my eyes at least, the image could have come straight off the walls of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA).

And I wasn't the only one who thought this. LeLapin was delighted with the image she'd created and JumbleTowner Marty F suggested that 'Reserved for Soniakot' (the item was actually reserved for JumbleTowner Soniakot) seemed like an appropriate title for the image. Yes, it was all very whimsical but...

Marty F also suggested that we create a gallery for such photos -- images of ordinary, everyday objects that are transformed by either accident or design, and which stand out from the photos that usually accompany ads on JumbleTown.

So, since August 2008, whenever I've come across an intriguing photo, I've set it aside. (Admin's Archive has tens of thousands of ads -- one wonders how many gems reside there. If I get the time, I'll have a look.)

And...here it is, a very personal and quirky selection of photos that have caught my eye. One could wax lyrical about all of them. For example, 'Hangers' by Durran is a riot of colour and movement that would probably appeal to Jack B. Yeats. 'Bathroom Cabinet' by Journeyman is reminiscent of Magritte and...yes, you're probably right -- I should get out more...

Finally! If any of the 'artists' featured below wish to have their photo or identifying User Name removed, please let me know. Also, if any Member comes across a photo that they think should appear in the gallery, they should copy and paste the item's address (in the address bar at the top of your screen) and PM it to me for consideration. Of course, Members should feel free to comment on the thread.

Collated Feedback from Members so far…

Colmsmum: Love it, Chris P! Great choices, I especially love the - Hairclip, Bathroom cabinet, Traffic jam (lol) and the Door. It's amazing what you can see when you look beyond the reason for the pic (if you know what I mean!). I agree any could be classed as 'Modern Art' and I reckon the 'Traffic jam' would look brill on a 'Just Passed' greeting card. Well done to all the photographers! (28/4/2009)

Sabrinabray: Simply brilliant. (28-04-2009)

LeLapin: Wow!! Thanks! :) I love the Door to Tir na nOg! (29-04-2009)

Linn: They are brilliant, thanks for sharing, really brightened my day. (29-04-2009)

Narizota: Also love these :) And I made the cut, yay!! (even if it is my old scratched table cloth ;)) Must say my favourite is the bathroom cabinet, that is inspired :) Thanks,Chris and Marty, too! (29-04-2009)

durran: WoW thanks for the nomination misetusa.
That Kerry teddy has a history. My hubby works for Irish rail, the teddy was 'up for the match' - tied to the front of the train. He was filthy when hubby brought him home. He is a brave little fellow. (29-6-09)

GuinnessGirl: Brilliant thread, I will check regularly for any more updates. ChrisP....there's gotta be loads more in the archives!? Well done to the photographers. It'll prob make more of us try harder with our photos although like you say....by chance they happen! (29-6-09)

bluecurlygirl: Only finding this now myself. What a giggle I had. They're brilliant. May I print the traffic jam one please with permission of the photographer of course :-) Well done everyone involved including the captionists or title-ists or whatever it is!! Fab. (11-07-2009)

Thanks again Durran, teddy made my husbands day. And he would like to assure viewers that he was not hurt during the staging of the photo :) Great idea, Keep up the good work Chris P and co. (10-11-2009)

Chamallo: Thanks so much for including my pic of the fridge magnets ............ Im no good with technology so for me to even take the pic never mind upload it was a triumph. Seeing it in the forum has made everything seem worth while ha ha cheers Chamallo. (13-1-2012)
