€13 million Programme to Promote Recycling in Ireland

Dept of the Environment Press Release (10/04/2007)

"Roche Launches €13 million Programme to Promote Recycling in Ireland"

"More waste than ever that is generated in Ireland is being recycled. We are making rapid progress towards becoming a recycling society, but we now need to reduce our reliance on overseas recycling facilities and do more recycling in this country", said Mr. Dick Roche, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government speaking today (10 April) on the publication of the €13 million Market Development Programme for Waste Resources. The Programme sets out a range of measures to identify and address barriers to higher levels of recycling in Ireland.

"Currently most of the material being deposited by the public at bring banks or recycling centres is exported for reprocessing, mostly to other EU countries" said the Minister, "Over the next few years, especially as more households start to use brown bins for kitchen and garden waste, we need to develop more capacity to recycle our waste and derive optimum added value from these waste resources here in Ireland. This will not only reduce negative environmental impacts associated with the movement of waste it will also provide employment opportunities in the recycling sector. As the document notes, a stronger indigenous waste recycling sector will provide a buffer against global economic shocks or economic failure "
