My young daughter asked me to come out to the garden to see the little "bird" that fell out of the sky. I nearly had a heart attack when I saw this. Its wingspan is about 2inches. It has a reddy brown marking on each wing. It does not seem to be too well. I put a big glass vase over it to take photos and it seems to have an injured wing. Will I just leave it to the elements? If its too injured to fly the first bird that sees it will have a nice big meal!!!

You could try to help it, but it will probably not make it. Those little guys aren't that resilient. The best thing I would do is put it out in a tree and let it be. If you believe like I do, it will be ok. Sometimes you can kill it just from stressing it out by touching it, but I think it's great you care about creatures like that. I'm the same way!!!!!!

hi there - you should definitely google it - my sister found one that was bright red with black stripes - she googled it and found exactly what it was! I - on the other hand have shivers all down my spine even thinking about them - eeewwww!!!

Fionaheno, I'm not mad about them either. I nearly died when I saw it.

I don't think its going to live. It crawled under our garden chair and hasn't really moved since. I did get some more great photos though.

I've had the misfortune of coming across two of these before (I dont like moths!) They are indeed Poplar Hawk Moths. I have a friend who works in Trinity and she showed a photo I took to the "Moth Guy" and he confirmed.

I put a pint glass over it to take the photo and it filled the whole bottom of the glass! It had literally just dropped from the curtain when I was getting dressed after a shower. Cue manic naked dancing and screaming! We (meaning husband) just let it out of the glass and off it went.

Apparently they are really common around the Cork area but because of rising temperatures are coming further up the country... ooh and they live in Poplar trees, hence the name.

The second one I found it work and it was dead unfortunately.
