Wow! I'm just back from holidays and I'm blown away by the very thoughtful comments, thanks to everyone. In reply to Kleenqueen, the wall with the red flowers was plastered already, but I can guarantee that plastering isn't necessary. The flowerbed in my Mam's was built from scratch and was tiled without plastering first. As long as the surface to be tiled is fairly even, it will be fine. I'm not a professional tiler (as the prof. tilers in my family will quite readily attest to) but the beauty of this type of work is exactly that..... it doesn't have to be perfect. It's not a bathroom or kitchen, the surface doesn't have to be perfectly even, it might seem like a difficult job, but honestly it's not that hard and you are only limited by your imagination.
