I would give them a good scrub with sugar soap diluted in hot water. A good hard bristle new yard brush will get the job done quickly and a firm bristled scrubbing brush for edges and corners. Remember to rinse off well. You probably won't need a work-out afterwards. It'll be good exercise!
It's powerful stuff so wear gloves. You can get sugar soap in most hardware shops. MIL will approve of old fashioned approach.
