You should really look and see if the ribbon is damaged and replace this first, I used to do this with mobile flip phones when the screen didn't work.
It's cheaper than a new screen that's for sure. But you have to open it up carefully and see if it's damaged, If the actual screen is whole then it could just be that the ribbon is worn out.
