I've had the misfortune of coming across two of these before (I dont like moths!) They are indeed Poplar Hawk Moths. I have a friend who works in Trinity and she showed a photo I took to the "Moth Guy" and he confirmed.

I put a pint glass over it to take the photo and it filled the whole bottom of the glass! It had literally just dropped from the curtain when I was getting dressed after a shower. Cue manic naked dancing and screaming! We (meaning husband) just let it out of the glass and off it went.

Apparently they are really common around the Cork area but because of rising temperatures are coming further up the country... ooh and they live in Poplar trees, hence the name.

The second one I found it work and it was dead unfortunately.
