burnt/used oil
fence posts are often coated with burnt/used oil especially the ends that go into the ground. it works very well but it stinks for months afterwards and i believe it would be a relatively long time before one can plant anywhere near it.....i choose to use one of the well known brands recently, more expensive but nothing like as polluting as used oil.....
