Default Old table coasters need re vamp

Hi,
I have a set of 6 large circular coasters. They are cork backed and of good quality , fronts are stained and shabby , but are otherwise in good nick.
Would acrylic paint be hard wearing enough ? If so, I would think of stencilling them.
I also thought of sticking family photographs on them but am not sure how to waterproof them.
I saw something on a website where they used Amy Butler stationery and gave it several layers of Modge Podge. Is this the same as PVA glue?
All suggestions gratefully received, the funkier the better.
I love the before/afters on this site.

Make mosaics/collages of b&w photos (reprinted of course) and adhere with PVA glue. Cover the whole surface over the new pic with PVA as well. Leave to dry and repeat. Re-paint the whole thing again with glue (waiting for it to dry between each coat) 5-6 times if I recall correctly and it will be glossy, spill proof and sentimental decoupage.

If the pics you use have a rough, torn white edge it will look even better, imho :).

Have fun with it :)
