Default strange code type marks on wood chairs, identify if anyone can please?

Hi, found these markings on the three chairs i foiund in the skip, on the base of the sadle board back underneath the seat i found three brush/stain marks of letters.
also some chisel stamping of XV111 and on another just 11. i am also putting up some images of other ID marks of shapes and joins, really would love to know period and maker or anything to identify these chairs.
thanks in anticipation.

ps. i have recovered the seat! two more to go

these are roman numerals XVIII = 18 II = 2
You could try asking about them on this site

http://www.allexperts.com/user.cgi?m...5284&catID=682

Ask Michael Andrew Wilson he seems to cover european furniture.

Default thanks Gormal my neighbour...

my neighbour, a bit of a 'wheeler dealer' says the marks mean before 1918 cos after that date the end of the chairs would have been done separately and casters were put on.
he also feels, no dowl rods and good craftmanship but other than that, no further with the stain initial on the back of seat support.

the seat part looks defo like plywood, but that could have been added on over the years.
the wood is hard for sure, no sign of real deterioration in this.
my neighbour thinks it could be oak
still a mystery

Default

I added a link to my previous post for you to get help in identification of the chairs. I would say that they are oak but the numbers are not the year but the sequence of how many were made.

go to that website and see what they say.
