Default My new makeshift Fireplace....

I moved into my new apartment on the 1st of December 2011, The room was lovely but just a shell...... A friend of mine offered me an old electric Fire that just needed a good clean but worked fine!!

I then had the idea of building my own surround out of MDF and coating it with mahogany varnish, painted in a certain way that it looks like real wood. and two roofing slates for the base.

It was a considerably cheap build only costing in the region of about 40 euro!!

MDF = 18.50
2 Slates = 4.00
Skrews = 6.50
Varnish = 8.95

I'm thrilled with how it turned out. Its completely free standing and now it can be used in any room of house or come with me wherever I move to next. It comes in three parts so its easy to dismantle, and it plugs into any regular socket!!

Fantastic - an idea for flat-pack sales maybe?
It looks really cosy at Christmas - even Shrek has pulled up a chair!

That's looking great! Mondubics is absolute right, you should market your invention! I love your 'Ta-Da!" photo - brilliant.

Thanks a bunch guys..... It Makes it all worthwhile to hear nice comments!!

Very clever mondubics, would you believe i never even copped that Shrek was sitting in an armchair, He's also looking at the fire :-D

And smokeyeyes your dead right, simpler can be better in the right conditions!!

I wouldn't mind doing it as a little business, it was enjoyable and satifying to make, but I might have to practice on a couple more first to fine tune it.......

I'm already hooked now, more projects to come..... TTFN ;-)

That looks fantastic!!! and I love that you can take it with you when you move, before we got our house I lived in lots of different flats etc in Dublin andf any improvements had to stay put :( I didn't think like you did. Very clever!!!!!
