There was no quarry tile. The house is a 1930s farmhouse in Donegal. The original kitchen floor was a thin layer of oncrete over dirt. The concrete had lines drawn into it to simulate tiles. The living room had a suspended timber floor, which had rotted badly as the original damp proof course had failed. There was an extension at the back containing a damp and dank bathroom and kitchen, the original kitchen (with the range, as seen in the photos) having become a dining room. There were three bedrooms upstairs.

We basically stripped the house back to the walls, poured new concrete floors downstairs, with damp course and underfloor heating, tiling the ground floor throughout, and returning the kitchen to its original location.

Upstairs, we removed the partition walls that enclosed two of the bedrooms and the hallway and liked the space so much that we moved the living room up to here, to take advantage of the nice views to the front of the house.

The final configuration has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. It's designed for the future in that we plan to retire there and when we're old, it will be possible to live very comfortably in just the downstairs half of the house.
