Default a quote for insulation and repairs

hi everyone,
just seriously worried my twin now disabled will be taken for a ride.
quote for her jobs came to over E7,000. this was to insulate and lag attic/tank/pipes.
fix a leaky toilet, new taps on radiators, new boiler and emersion and to rehang internal doors and hall doors, seal the hall door and airate insulation rubber that has got tired.
i think all far too much, eg quote for rehang of hall door alone, cost E100
defo the attic and pipes/tank need doing asap.
he also told her to forget the insulation grants cos it takes forever to do the forms and you'd only get about E200 for this anyway at the end of the day.
advice sought on this.
both of us completely new to this, and single women can be milked. i believe anyway.

Default Look for another quote

At the very least you should look for another quote.

Contact a maintenance company from the golden pages and explain what you need done and that you're looking for a quote for the work.

I gather from your previous posts that your sister has a disability.

There are schemes available where you can get the insulation done for free.

My mother got her attic, all the pipework and tanks insulated. She also had all the doors and windows draught proofed, all her light bulbs replaced with energy savers and an outside light installed.

If needed she could have had her radiators and boiler replaced also.

She got this work done because she was over 66 and living on her own.

IF you don't ask you'll never find out.

If any contractor tells you that the forms are too much Hassle etc He is a COWBOY and most likely not registered for tax or hasn't got a proper C2.

Advise your sister to steer clear and get someone that has a more professional approach.

Regards,

Fries.

Read this article its not just for older people.

Default grants

The SEAI grants have a list of registered contractors who do the work and you have to choose one of these when you're applying for your grant, so you're guaranteed not to have a 'cowboy'! I also think the grant is more than €200, but check their website.

Default thanks again..a slight bit of movement

we have since forgotten about this guy, but will look up the site, for us, we went and bought that insulating seal for the doors, we had great fun last night, but it doesnt go very far, but it was fun.
at least we felt proactive!
i dont think we will be using the chimney this winter so thats gettting sealed and then we shall move onto the radiator taps and try sort that out.
we have decided to do this bit by bit, but no doubt that attic and tank has to be a big priority.
we will get there.
the grants thing i will look up today.
xand thanks a mill to you.
i love these pages, everyone is so helpful.

Hi, if you go to seai.ie they have a list of grants and whats available as there is a grant available for a new boiler as i got it earlier this year, and they only payout to registered contractors. And as fries with that said would do no harm to get a few quotes most decent companies do free quotations

Default Insulation etc

I know you said your sister is under 65 but Care & Repair from Age Action may be of some help to her. I was in contact with them before for a client who was disabled and although she was under 65 they said they might be able to help her due to her disability. I don't recall what area she was in but below are the contact details for Care & Repair in Dublin.

CARE & REPAIR PROGRAMME DUBLIN

Low Call: 1890 369369
Phone: 01 4756989
Fax: 01 8729957
Email: care&repairdublin@ageaction.ie

If you don't ask you don't get. Even if they could provide you with advice it might be some help. Best of luck. Sable x

Default no defeats on this one!

determination is the name of this game.
so far the twin has saved the quote of 3,000k and its not everyone diagnosed six years with parkinsons who will go out and buy insulating piping for the pipes, the duck tape and the knee pads, yep up she went.
its all done, the pipes that is, photo taken it looks wonderful.
next she plans to tackle the floors. i have to hand it to her, i couldnt.
up she went with her mobile for easy emergency calls and also a wooly hat after she nearly knocked herself out from hitting head off beam.
finding a small torch smothered in duck tap i asked had the young dog got at it, no was the reply, she had taped it above her head to see what she was doing.
asked about the celotape over her specs she told me they kept slipping down so she stuck em on.
impressive, just so frigging impressive

my twin has stalled on the job, best not ask her right now...she is recovering from a brutal dose over christmas, and right now her concern is concentrated around the 'nose' area!
will be in touch once i pluck this courage up!!! x
