Default new home trellis both sides

on either side of a small yard are very low walls with very very bare see -through trellis, i kinda want some privacy and wish to plant against these, climbers or sommut, but how do you tell the neighbours that you are doing this for aesthetics and not to 'shut them out!
also what would people suggest so that whatever i plant wont also invade their patch.
would it be best to put a more solid type trellis on my own side and grow on that?
its a very tricky one as neighbours and i are new to each other and dont want to fall out so early, if ever!
