Why are lotions and potions prohibited?

Hi all

Can someone tell me the rationale behind cosmetics and lotions etc being prohited on JT? I have a lot of stuff to give away and cant give it here and i don't understand why. They are all topical products, not oral, so wahts the risk? I know there is a risk of irritation etc but is it not the same for someone who buys a power tool and then injures themselves? I hate throwing stuff away so if someone can explain this to me, i'd be greatful! It's only some perfume and cosmetics, not bomb making material!

I'm the same actually, I have wanted to give away creams etc. but had read that it is not allowed on jtown. I understand that people might have allergies etc, but the same can be said for buying from the shop. I don't know if this is the reason, but I can't really see a valid reason, from my perspective. I'm sure lots of us have the usual presents of lotions etc, that we'll never use and would like to pass on. Info please, Chris P might enlighten us, please please.

We prohibit the Giving and Taking of any type of lotion/cosmetic that may be applied externally for the simple reason that adulterated or contaminated products may be passed on by unscrupulous individuals (not your good self, of course!). Admittedly, the chance of someone actually doing this is very slim but we have to be careful nonetheless.

For those who are not familiar with the list of prohibited items on Jumbletown, here's the relevant section from our User Guide:

Prohibited Items on JumbleTown.
There are certain items that may not be given away on JumbleTown. The following list is a guideline and JumbleTown reserves the right to remove any item without prior notice.

The following may not be given away or requested on JumbleTown:

1 Any pet or live animal
2 Medicines, pills or drugs
3 Lotions/Cosmetics: Any type of lotion/cosmetic that may be applied externally.
4 Soiled clothing
5 Food and beverages
6 Fireworks
7 Firearms or offensive weapons (including knives)
8 Items or materials that promote hatred, violence, or racial intolerance
9 Pesticides
10. Pornographic Material
11 Any item whatsoever that is illegal in the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland

Then there was the old radio I gave away - bomb hidden in the battery compartment.

Ohhh and the sofa had a dozen eggs from last year stoshed in the base of it.

Honest to God, I think that is very OTT altogether!
Especially in a recession - I love second hand lipstick! Its very tastey indeed!

The difference is that you don't apply an old radio or a sofa to your face. Okay, so you might put your ear to the radio, or your cheek on the sofa, but I think you understand what I mean!

Fair enough, weirdo's might contaminate the products, but surely thats not Jumbletowns concern? I mean its just a website. If I owned Jumbletown I wouldn't prohibit them. God, why are people so careful and politically correct? ....

Its not just the possibility of it happening on JT. When my daughter was younger I bought a bottle of Calpol in a well known supermarket chain. One night when I was out my husband thought she had a bit of a fever and gave her a spoon of what he thought was the calpol from the bottle I had bought. Turned out that someone had taken the Calpol out and replaced it with water. I was so terrified when I looked at the bottle I had it analysed and it was confirmed to be ordinary water. From then on the supermarkets had to have such things on a higher shelf and the manufacturer started using child tamperproof caps.

Sorry about your Calpol incident, thats awful. But we're discussing cosmetics and such here, not oral pharmaceutical solutions. There is as much a risk of somebody taking a microwave which would explode when used as the electrical goods aren't assessed by JT or anything. or JT dont test the old clothes I give away for microbiological activity or flees etc whcih could easily be hiding in the fabric. I think JT have the right idea about banning cosmetics but if this is the case, why allow anything to be given away on this website as there is some risk to EVERYTHING you take from givers here.. DOenst make sense to ban lotions and potions to me at all if other items such as clothes, machinery, cars (which could be faulty)and electrcial goods to name a few are freely given and taken.... I work in the pharmaceutical indusrty and I have a very methodical scientific mind and conduct many risk assessments for my company and although i can see the risk in this alright, I think it's over kill...

PS So sorry to hear about your Calpol incident again. Afriend of mine got a bottle from her local chemist which had actually expired. Blame tends to go to the manufacturer but the onus is definitely on the pharmacist/store where faulty products are bought. I hve a young son and your story has just scared the hell out of me!

It is the responsibility of Members to assess the goods they receive on JumbleTown.

At the top of the Domestic Appliances forum (and others), we include a post which states: "Takers of electrical items should ensure that the items are checked/serviced by qualified personnel before use."

The same applies for anyone buying a second-hand product. It's much easier to get an appliance checked than to send away a cosmetic product or a foodstuff to a laboratory for analysis --that's why we prohibit the Giving and Taking of such items on JumbleTown.

Folks may take a second-hand sofa or jacket, but second-hand medicine or lipstick?? -- I think not!

Sparlyirisheyes, you missed my point, if it can happen in a major chain store with cctv's it can happen anywhere. If some people have a twisted mind that they would do such a thing they will find a way to such an extent as tampering with children's medicine, whereas JT members are registered on JT and can be traced and most people using JT are familiar with other users and in the majority of cases will have given or received and as such will have had personal contact. Reading my own reply I suppose the argument could go either way.

Another way of looking at it is if anyone uses the charity shops, they will accept cosmetic products etc. but they will not accept electrical products or anything that can be used as a weapon e.g. knives etc.

im sorry but for once i have to disagree with jt!!! items like this would be probably be unwanted gifts in which case they would still have the origional seal on them! i have a big drawer of them and i would have put them on jt long ago if it was allowed!

It's a Pity One Can't give away Cosmetics coz if it were allowed on JT I could supply the whole country ive got box loads of it im a hoarder and I hate to throw anything out. I thought about sellin it on Ebay but i'd hate to charge anyone for it ah well if its in the rules its in the rules pity though

It's an awful pity that there are so many lunatics out there that would contaminate such things as perfumes and cosmetics. I absolutely love perfumes and have often bought them at jumble sales etc. I never even considered that someone have contaminated them (and contaminated them with what, acid or something so sinister??). Would it be appropiate for jumbletowners that have dealt with each other before and trust each other to let each other know if they have something on offer by PM or would this be off limits as well?
