Is solid concrete hard to get off a complete small yard, does one have to be careful of pipes underneath.
How do you prepare for soil and grass after removal.

Hi Minnie,

Removing the concrete depends on its thickness and how strong it is.

Start at an edge and see how easily it breaks using a lump hammer, my advice would be to try a little bit and see how you get on with it.
When you remove the concrete you will be left with the subsoil underneath.
I removed a concrete yard years ago and all I did was dig over the subsoil and put a six inch layer of topsoil on this.
I then planted grass seed and rolled it once the grass was strong enough.

Grass will grow normally in 200mm of soil, you may be able to leave the concrete and put topsoil on top. I have done this and it works great.

Topsoil is the top layer of soil in a garden down to a depth of about 200mm, it is necessary for growth
Subsoil is the soil under the topsoil, crap for growing.

thanks for that tip, thats great, may need a lump hammer for parts, eg wee pond? Larger plants?

you can break up the concrete using a kango hammer....easily available from a tool hire company............break a little first and see how thick the concrete is....usally 3 to 4 inches.................topsoil is the best to put in to get it ready for grass...............you should be ok with pipes as they should be16 to 18 inches under the ground.....................i hope this is of help to you.......have fun.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
