Should be easily done. I made a compost bin/wormery out of an old barrel a while back. just drill plenty of holes in the base for drainage, and ideally several around the sides for aeration too. I put some gravel in the base of mine too to help with drainage, I was putting worms in it so I didn't want it to get waterlogged on the poor dears...

Ok i will try that and see how it goes, seems a shame to waste the bin when i can use it for composting!

Ive now converted my wheelie bin into a compost bin.

I drilled 6 one inch holes in the base for drainage.
Then i drilled 6mm holes on 3 of the sides covering an area of 1sq.foot per side.
Ive cut a flap at the back near the base to remove the compost when its ready.

Now i have to play the waiting game to see if it works.

Will try to get photos up on site if anyone is intrested.

hi all. Some great ideas I must say, thanks. Last year I drilled 5 inch holes in the SIDES of a blue plastic barrel, planted strawberry plants, and had a bumper crop this year!

Hi the child

Would you explain in a bit more detail what you had to do to grow the strawberries please?

Also are they grown inside or can they be left outside?

Thanks

Hi folks. Cascade Id love to see pics of your converted wheelie bin. Have thought of doing this but was a bit wary. Also wondering about growing the srawberries in a barrell...could you try potatoes the same way I wonder???

Hi Cascade,

Could you post pics of your conversion?? Would love to see them as we have a wheelie bin that we have been talking about doing this to it for about a year, but we can't seem to agree on the best way... such a harmonious household.... lol....

Thanks
