After moving I didn't have anywhere to hang my kitchen towels. So I took a thin strip of wood, fixed 3 pegs (not too tight)with little screws evenly spaced and screwed it to the door.
I haven't yet got around to painting the wood, but at least the towels are in a handy place out of the way!

Thanks! I've finally got round to doing the top of my computer table which I got from another kind Jter. I saw this idea online where they had tables with comic books lacquered on top. Was seriously tempted to do Spongebob ;o)
It's the kid in me..lol anyway I decided on superheros instead. I've got enough sticky back plastic to do another one, if I get fed up of it.
So after a few printouts, organization and patience this is the outcome.

This basic dust cover for my sewing machine was made from a damaged underbed storage bag gotten from Jt (thanks Mary from Dublin). And a ribbon that was wrapped round a new robe.
I'm sure I'll make another one later or add to this one after each project.

Thankyou guenivere for all the lovely fabric have started to get stuck in already.
Used the lace curtaining to cover the porch windows and the outbuilding.
Made a pot stand and tea towel. And apron (bit of a Cath Kidston look), not going to use that design for the next one though!
The other half requested 2 pillowshams so this is what he got pic 3, a little luxury.

Thanks, the minute I saw the fabric I knew it was going to be my apron ... lol

Next on the agenda is applying the pillowcase theory to cushion covers, and a couple of tablecloths with matching place mats.

Hi Gormal

These are really lovely items, I'm not sure which is my favourite the pillowsham or the apron. I recently learned how to use my sewing machine that had been in the attic for 3 years. I've started a patchwork quilt but haven't had much time lately but seeing your projects has spurred me on a bit.

Thanks for sharing

Oh Sparkwell you are brave, I don't know if I'd have the patience for a patchwork quilt. I did a basic one years ago for my parents, but have not had the urge to do another, although the thought did pass through my mind.
Anyway I made a list of other things to do, probably to avoid the quilt idea..lol
It's been a good few years since I used my machine... at least 5 years!!
I look forward to seeing that quilt when your done. I plan to make some bedding later too.

Eibh, I had to make it as the plastic one it came with had torn. And I have a feeling that it may end up as a lining for the next cover in the future.

Thanks for the comments and happy crafting.

I tried to take today off....lol.. went for a walk and found a pebble with a hole and thought ohh that would make a nice incense holder. Then I got home and remembered the tuna tin and turned it into a pin cushion (stuffed with wool as had no stuffing and a pebble for weight)... which I really need now I'm sewing.

Today I made a peg bag. And a roll for my knitting needles and crochet hooks etc... well it's an improvement on a plastic bag and at least everything is in one place. Did take me a while to suss out how to make all the compartments, and I did make a blooper but worked round it. There are also pockets behind the bottom section, and I still need to buy some ribbon to tie it.

Thanks Unapam! Well I'm beginning to realise that Pin cushions are too handy, I wonder how I managed without one for so many years. The wrist strap pincushion is looking very appealing all of a sudden... might make one yet!
The placemats were a bit of a challenge for me, mainly the corners! But now that I've made them once it'll be easier next time round. I also just finished coasters to match.

Loved the cushion you made with the padded heart... forgot to tell you that on your post, body in one place mind in another!!

Made a few key fobs, the one below is for my bike lock and fits on the wrist so I won't lose it. Also used an old milk bottle as a watering can, simply make a few holes near the top and whala!

I finished socks for the other half and had 24g left so I made a small crocheted Amigurumi toy. hand-stitched the eyes and put a fabric nose on. It's stuffed with shredded fabric scraps. Not wasting any of it...lol

Also our door kept hitting the wall and was leaving a mark on the paint, it was only a matter of time before a hole appeared. So I rolled up a fabric scrap, covered it with another scrap and blanket stitched the seams. Now I've got a bung which prevents the door handle hitting the wall.

My other half was hopeful I would make a shade from scratch.....hmmm
Well there was a old shade in the loft which was rather grotty to say the least. So I took the cover off and made one to fit, with colours that just so happen match the rug, also adds some colour to the cold porch. Didn't cost anything. Tied the top and bottom with string concealed in the hems. I put the string in before sewing the hems to save that fiddly job of trying to work it through with a safety pin.

I wasn't too happy with the first one as the seed at the bottom never got eaten. So I made this tester. 1 well cleaned vinegar bottle, some wood, a jam jar lid and 2 plastic straps/ties.
The bottle just lifts out for re-filling, you have to keep the bottle lid so when you put it back into the rack, the seed stay put until you remove the lid, the seeds then fall into the jam lid bit by bit as the birds eat.

Everybody has probably done this at one point. the tin can desk tidy! Well at least it's some place to put all the pens that end up there. I just slipped on a fabric sleeve which was leftover from the chair I'm trying to recover.
Did the same thing with a big tin and used it as a small light shade, which is safe enough as it's an energy bulb and is only on when we go up and down the stairs.

hi gormal, nice light shade!! love it. pls would really want to know what the tin light shade is hanging on. how did u hook it to the light

It's hanging on the tin bottom. I used the wire bit of a shade, drew the inner circle on the tin, cut out the circle... well actually tore gently with pliers, as I don't have the tools for making a nice hole. So the hole is just big enough to get the plastic fitting into it, then just hung like a normal shade, screwing the plastic bit back on etc

Gormal
25-03-2010, 07:59 PM
Yep another tin. lol... Lidl's has changed the top of the evaporated milk tins, now you get a ring pull that leaves a little slot.... how handy is that! Makes a great money tin, to get at the pennies you have to get the tin opener out.
This is a great one for the kids as they can decorate it any which way they like. I'm still deciding on mine ;o)
Have now decorated it with a wrap around bracelet and scrap of fabric

Well you know the fabric is part of the load I got. The handle is a belt I got of JT from Angelsfishingrod including the d-rings. The ribbon came tied around something....I think it might have been clothes or cushions. so the only thing I had to buy was the zip. It has an inside pocket for my mobile, a pocket with a flap for other bits and a place for pens, cos I just hate having to rumage for one. And before you ask the pattern I made myself after a lot of thought, and took me 3 days to sew as I've no clue about bag making ......well I'm a bit wiser now! ;) I so love it!!

I had a really heavy piece of fabric that I couldn't figure out what to do with, until I turned it back to front. So I bought a non slip mat in the euro store, made my own binding and gently teased it through my machine as it is so thick. End result is a cushy mat for the bathroom.

I had this huge L shaped fabric, which I cut to fit the length. Stitched a band at the top, then slotted a piece of garden cane through. It's mounted on 2 screws as I had no little cup hooks. The bottom is weighted down [that's how it came]. It was a bit of a rush job, but at least with the nice weather the door is open and the flies are outside!
I think a good idea would be to make a frame, staple netting to it and slot it to the outside, like a second door.

Love the nightie. it looks so cool for these balmy nights we're getting, the slippers are lovely too and the fly curtain is a great idea. What did you put on sole of slippers? aye it was sealing silicone. But today I got a backup of "twist-off" gripper pads [last one in shop]. you used to be able to get similar non slip mats for the car dash. It's certainly a neater option.

I picked this bag up for €2 in the charity shop, it was really filthy inside. I took it for the handles and magnetic snap. I repurposed the lot.
First I made a mini bin, painstakingly handstitched reusing the same gut that held the bag together, lined it with a poly bag [stitched in]that was heading for the recycle bin.
Next I used the Handles and zip and made a bag with inside pocket, fabric from stash.
Magnetic snap is left and will be added to another bag, will add pic when done! If you're not fed up yet...lol

Thankyou Mandolin!
Been at the stash again, this time trying to use up the bits I'm not so keen on and a bit that I really like.
1st made some shopping bags [more planned] and a laundry wash bag for washing stuff in, I have a feeling I'll need it when I wash the slippers, it'll catch the bits that fall off. For the tie I just used the sewn edge of the sheet I repurposed earlier......yes I keep everything...lol

2nd I have a family birthday coming up soon so I made a make-up bag and matching toiletry bag. I loved that fabric and really wanted something usefull from it.

3rd Draught excluders one normal stuffed with all the fabric scraps [shredded], then I thought that since we always use that door it's going to be annoying having to replace the excluder all the time so I made one that you slip under the door, by rolling up the outer edges and stitching in place by hand [not my favourite job]. I had to do a bit of shaping at 1 end so the door could close. It seems to be doing the job and staying in place so far.

Just yesterday my sister was saying that her mother in law had some old deck chairs in the shed that she was getting and was planning on painting and replacing the fabric for a lovely shabby chic summer look. We were wondering how to get the fabric on to the wooden bars. I thought of using ties in the same fabric. How did you go about it? They look fab I am going to point her in the direction of this post to see how they will look. Great stuff! I also love the bags, is it hard to get the zip in neatly? Lovely fabric.

Gormal

Deckchair - I used a heavy duty stapler that I picked up in Lidl for €9.99, I wrapped the fabric round 1 1/2 times after stapling before fixing to the bottom in the same way... yes it was a bit fiddley. Although ties might be an alternative if you want to be able to wash the fabric, but would need good strong stitching and knots. I have to make a little headrest pillow with ties at some point too.

Zips..... well I don't know if they're neat lol, but since I've learnt that you attach everything to the zip first THEN sew up the outer edges, it's made my life easier..... I get so annoyed when I forget that gap in the lining your supposed to pull everything through!

I saw this idea in a magazine where they were priced at £48 [Overpriced]. Then I stumbled on it again recently and decided to have a go at making my own.
First you cut a circle larger that the lid, stuff it, stitch and draw closed enough to fit the lid. Glue [I used duct tape] the cushion to the lid around the edges, Then make a decorative border or use a pretty ribbon [haven't any] handstitch the seam slip over and glue in place.

There you have a multi purpose storage jar, for beads, buttons etc...

Thanks for the odd wool Unapam here is the 1st thing. A nice cosy neck wrap, it is neat around the neck and is like a tight cowl when buttoned right up, my scarf always tries to get away from my neck so this should be perfect in the winter.
Also been busy altering t-shirts that I bought last year, which were to low cut but had plenty room to adjust, and this one that got wider and wider and wider, tried all the usual things that shrink clothes but this one just defies it all. So I chopped a few inches out of the center, sewed it back together and stitched some stretchy lace [from some pennys undies] down the middle to hide the seam. Another top saved. You could also make a cardigan or stitch a panel on the front and lace it up to look like a corset t-shirt!
My emptly perfume bottle accidentally went into the fire with all the papers, luckily it turned out to be a good thing as all the plastic melted off, I am going to use it as an incense holder but today it's handy for the Marigolds that got trimmed by accident ;o)

This had been on my "to do list" all summer and 2 days ago I finally got around to doing it. Fabric, lining, wood, 2 screws and o rings from stash, bought nylon string and curtain eyes & hooks.
Instructions on how to make it are here

www.alternative-windows.com/roman-blind.htm

I stapled the blind to the wood, but the velcro is a fab idea if you need to wash it regularly. I only used 3 rods and next time I'm going to sew the rod pockets to the lining before I attach the 2 bits of fabric together.
Anyway the arrow in the pic is where it is secured to a cup hook. And it's only partially up.

All these great things got me thinking - I need something to protect the surface of my phone from scratches.
I don't mind if I have to slide it out to answer it, so long as it doesn't fall out accidentally.
Everyone must have off-cuts of fabric that would make something like that?
It would be better if the inside wasn't slippy, more like microfleece, to clean the phone going in and out.
But it has to LOOK NICE!!!!!
Can anyone do the pattern or suggest how to do it?

Gormal
11-09-2010, 10:25 AM
I bought a phone sock of ebay a few years back and it's great. Nice snug fit.
If you wanted to make your own, you could
a) knit one

b) get a nice patterned sock, turn inside out, slip the phone into it, so you know where to cut it. Pinch fabric together at side of phone and cut about 2cm out from there giving you a seam allowance.
Remember you want a snug fit, so slightly stretch the fabric and pin. Test that the phone fits ok, then sew side & bottom. Trim off the excess and finish the raw edge to help stop the stitches fraying.

c)sew one. Take a piece of paper wrap around phone, pinch to mark side seam, add 1cm seam allowance top, side & bottom.
If you want an elasticated top add 2.5cm seam allowance. If you want a flap closure cut out a long rectangle. Or use an elastic string to hook around a button.
See pictures, the pen line in the last one is the actually sewing line, leave 1cm all round for seam. If you want to do this sewing version I could write up a tutorial with pics or may be able to make one for you depending on phone.

Thanks again unapam I finally used up that bit of big wool. Also thanks to Laineymc for the buttons, they were a perfect addition for the neck warmer.
The hat is a drops pattern, mitts and scarf are own pattern. They are going to be so cosy for the winter days.

And this is the bench I made from the broken fencing, I even reused all the screws which took a bit of encouragement to straighten out again. yes I know it needs a lick of paint.... I promise to do it before the next millennium when I decide on the colour.........lol

this is made from bits of cardboard, polystyrene, printed paper, string and glue.
First I trimmed the polystyrene sheet to size, it is about 1.5cm thick. Then I laid it on cardboard and cut around it with a 2 inch allowance. Made a frame with the cardboard, added string at top, taped the corners to hold in place. I found some patterns on a paper craft site and printed out, cut and stuck together to form a border which I then glued around the sides and edge. I'm pleased with the result and got rid of some rubbish in the process!

@Tudlytops, lol yes there is just steal all the junk ;)

I've been very lazy lately, well actually I've been knitting, busy with a couple of things but legwarmers get priority....lol no surprise there!!
Anyway I got a pile of half slips from Elbo (thankyou) and have started the conversion. I simply made it into a full slip because I don't like the low cut dresses/tops. I removed the elastic from the front part of the waist and folded over ribbon, added ribbon straps and shaped the sides for a better fit... job done. I'm going to do the same with a couple of the others, when I pick up some lace trim, the rest I will shorten a little to suit knee length skirts.

Hi Gormal

You mentioned a while back a website with patterns for free that you print off at home. What is this site? I have some things i want to make on the machine and i have the basic ideas of what i want in my head like a baby bag with 2 sides as my son will be 18 months when my next child is born PG! So rather than havin 2 bags just have 1 to do both children.

Thanks for reading!

Don't burn all your twigs! Re-purpose them in the garden etc.

For the twig trim/mini fence I used the wire from excess tumble dryer hose and drilled holes in the sticks about 1" from the top and threaded them onto the wire, probably best to do the bottom too if you have enough wire. Good for putting around your plastic plant pots too.

Next. Make a shawl pin from a twig. Just trim with the carpet knife and sand down to finish. You can either draw a design on it or add beads held in place with pins or skinny nails. Now I just have to knit the shawl.....lol

Seemed a shame to burn the box, so I made a tri fold card out of the tissue box.
I tidied up the aperture with a stanley knife and made sure the edges were straight. Stuck a picture in the window, printed out a verse, glued that on and there you have one quirky birthday card.

My first ‘before & after’ thanks to all the inspiration on this thread. I couldn’t find the right colour leggings for under my new dress so my (clever)aunt suggested this: I got the colour I wanted in a very large long sleeved t-shirt, nearly new for €3. The sleeves became the calf-length legs and I cut the pants part out of the rest of the shirt. You can see the diagonal seams on the legs where they join the pants part. They won’t win any sewing competitions and they’re a bit baggy in the bum, but all that’ll be hidden under the dress. I’m delighted with them.

After doing a tidy upper in the shed, I had some old tubes to recycle. Most seem to make belts or wallets from them, I'm still trying to decide what to make and if I have enough tubes.
Anyway I made a start with trouser straps for when out cycling. They are just plain as they're for the man in my life, but I might sneak a doodle in later ;o)
I have to polish them up with flash dash or something.

Also saw a key rack made using the valves so might try that eventually.

Here's a thing I made out of a discarded strap from a banjaxed camera bag, and a bit of black elastic (pillaged from a waistband). I was tormented carrying around my work diary, specs, phone and pen and forever dropping one or other and fishing around on the floor of the car. This keeps them all together. I stitched the elastic onto the front of the strap leaving gaps for my things, and another bit of elastic at the back to keep it tight on the diary cover.

I couldn't wear these as they were too tight so rather than throw them out I decided to use one pair for a no sew draught excluder, simply stuff 1 and a half of the socks then slip over each other.

Next pair were converted to mittens. I really loved the pattern and wanted to make something practical and useful.
So I traced out my hand made a paper pattern with a rounded top, marked the thumb area and cut a thumb piece.
Sock inside out, mark round top, stitch. Cut, then carefully cut the thumb hole.
stitch and cut the thumb bit, then hand stitch 1st to hold in place and sew with the machine.

Eibhlinn was kind enough to give me some belts for re-purposing a while back, actually seems ages ago. Well since it was raining and I was twitchy, I went to work on making the wind chime.
I used beads from a bag gotten off JT, gut left over from the basket bin, tiny pot which the seed failed to grow, glassy belt beads and hoops from another belt.
I made a bead bracelet to fit the lip of the pot and secured each drop evenly around this, with one long one in the center.
Makes a very calming jingle. Thanks Eibh!

I wonder would a piece of inner tube work as a non-slip? Cut in the shape of a heel / sole and glued on...
Think I saw somewhere too that lines of silicone squeezed onto the soles (from those tubes you use for sealing around the bath) makes them grippy.

Aye the tubes would work, will try that on the misters slippers when I make them, bored of knitting just now, I actually used the silicone for my non slip, rubbed into the wool to grip and it survived the wash too.

So I had some corrugated card salvaged from a gift box which I cut to size for the toppers... lets call them that to save confusion. I found an image I liked and printed it out 3 times, cut all missing out certain bits with each layer. I arranged the butterfly bits and glued the whole one to the card, then used small bits of tape to attach the next two layers, I repeated this with the fairy.
Next I found some background images I liked and made them into a printable border for the jars. Once printed and cut I used that sticky back plastic to protect them and stick them around each jar. Glued the toppers in place. Now I have two decorative jars that can be used for a number of things...... including the next floral gift I might receive.

I've wanted to make one of these vacuum covers ever since I saw one in some movie. Don't know why, but I just thought it was such a clever idea.
Bear in mind I have no idea how these are made and the only thing I could find on the internet was to behead a soft toy..... nope not doing that!

So basically what I did was make a rag doll torso, using a plate to draw round for the head. I've never made a doll either so this is new to me. Make arms, stuff and pin to torso (this I didn't do first...duh eejit), sew the body and stuff the head. Then I had to figure out the gap for the handle to go in, I find it easiest to place it on the handle and pin in place, when you take it off straighten it up and sew around it. stuff it well and fit over the handle, it should sit nicely. Sew the stuffed sides closed.
Okay next up is the hair......another mystery to me but I found a tutorial and made two sets and stitched them onto the head, I decided to plait the hair for practicality.
Next up is the face, now this had me searching for quite a while as I wanted a sort of manga/anime style with the eyes. when I finally found something I liked I stitched the face on, putting pink felt for the mouth.
Off to the charity shop and found a nightie, took the front off it and was left with the skirt which I pleated to fit the doll, then I added the crossover front and sewed in place, also made a t-shirt to put under it.
It might be a better idea to make the torso with a bit at the back to slip the handle into.
