Help with coffee table repair?

We have a pine coffee table that needs repair and wondered if anyone could give me some advice on how to fix it.

The top of the coffee table has one wide gap between the parallel pieces of wood. Otherwise the table looks fine. It seems evident that the gap needs to be filled. There is no way to clamp it together.

We searched and saw something on shellac sticks. Are they available in Ireland and will it work? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know how good this method would work on your coffee table but I have used it to fill a gap in floorboards and it turned out pretty good.

Get an old piece of wood similar to your coffee table and saw into it to create sawdust, collect the dust on a clean sheet of paper (the finer the dust the better so use a saw with fine teeth)
Now take the sawdust and mix it with wood glue till you have a paste, use this paste to fill in the gap and when it is fully dry sand it down.
Wood glue dries completely clear and if the dust is fine enough you should hardly notice it.
I have also used this method many times when I wanted to hide screws in wood, just sink the screws below the surface and patch over with the paste.

You could get a thin strip of wood in a similar colour, coat the two sides with wood glue and push (or hamme rit) down into the crack. When the glue dries sand the surface till it is level with the table top. Another way would be to stick a piece of wood over the crack on the underside of the table top, then fill the crack with wood filler in a matching shade. The piece of wood underneath stops the filler falling through the crack. Good luck with it. E.

Asked my dad and he said that "Brummers Filler" would be the best. You can get this in any good diy shops or builders providers. Hope this helps.
