Painted bottles
2 Attachment(s)
Just thought i'd share my little hobby here!!
If you have any old bottles or jars (olive oil, carrots, wine, pasta sauce etc) paint them with nice designs and you can use them as vases, candle holders, sugar bowls, storage jars etc. If you dont have a use for them donate them to a charity shop so they can make some money out of your recycling! :P Here's some of mine.... |

painted glass
very nice work. What do you use to draw the outline? Is it lead? And where do you get it? I keep all my jars and bottles for recycling, but I usually have tons at any one time. Definitely gonna try this.

GORGEOUS WORK LELAPIN!
BillieT: If you go to your local stationery/art/hobby store they should have a full range of leads (you get them in gold, pewter, silver, black, grey, etc) If you don't feel confident about your drawing skills then you could always by some outline stickers (in any of the above colours - green, yellow, red, pink, etc as well). Then all you do is fill in the blanks :o) - a bit like paint by numbers without the numbers. The glass paints can be bought in the same places - although from time to time in the €2 store or knick knack shops you would find some cheap sets. If you are using this with kids then a water based product is better than the solvent one (fumes and clean-up-able-ness). The water based ones can be baked in an oven for 20 mins and they will set really well. NOT dishwasher safe - my attempt was ruined by someone's good intentions and now I have some kitchenware with bits of black that won't come off :o(. |
Beautiful
They look absolutely fabulous. I'm sure there is a market for them as people always love handpainted glass.
|
The are beautiful, well done.
|
My friends by them off me! Which is great....im addicted to it though so any money i get from it goes back in to buying new colours and outliners!!! Hahaha! :P
I just get it all from the local art shop in town or Blanchardstown. I use tubes of outliner and do it free hand but it's taken me a lot of practice to get any good at it! I've started buying cheap glasses from Tesco as well now and painting them for myself and friends and family!! :P |
They are beautiful, well done. I look forward to seeing more when you have them done.

Glass jars
And is the paint simply 'glass paint'?
|
Yeah... it's little tubs of glass/porchelain paint... you can use it on tiles and stuff as well but im not that brave! :P

For the kids too
I'm afraid I don't have pics but when my niece, nephew and my son were a lot younger (about ten years ago - aaaah!) I got large bottles (wine bottle - paul masson I think) and put a base coat on them. I then traced their favourite cartoon characters onto greaseproof paper - little mermaid & sebastien, Aladdin & the genie and winnie the pooh & friends. Then I scribbled over the back of the greaseproof paper with pencil, laid the scribbled side onto the bottles and retraced the pictures. The outline came out on the bottle and then it was just a matter of colouring it in as it were. I have to say I'm very proud of their novel money boxes (that's what they ended up being used for). Also a great way to make a unique vase for yourself or as a present for a friend. Christmas is coming guys. Some of the best presents I got were handmade gifts. If I get photos I'll post them.

That is such a good idea!!! And the Paul Masson bottles have big holes dont they!?!!?! :) What paint did you use as a base coat?!!
|
Type of paint
It was ten years ago but I know it was paint left over from painting a room. A friend of mine had done something similar to wine bottles. When it was all finished and completely dry (after doing the design on top) I coated it with household varnish in very thin coats so the bottles could be washed - after all they were going to three kids and we all know about mucky little fingerprints!!! Would love to see pics if anyone does it. Anyone can. I can't draw to save my life but the pictures came out perfect.

Paul Masson bottles
Yeah, sorry, they do have big holes. Perfect for a vase. And you have to drink the wine before too although better let the effects wear off ;-~ Equally you could copy maybe something from a tile in your bathroom and paint little jars with that design for holding bath salts etc. Actually I think I'll do that myself it's a good idea.

Black bottles
I think silver olives on a black bottle would be perfect! i.e. black olives. You must post a pic LeLapin

Silver stars and or snowflakes for Christmas? Celtic spirals of different sizes? You can fill these bottles with sand and make a lamp base from them too. Can't wait to see it! |

Ooooooooooooo i like the celtic swirls idea!!! Thanks for the pics!!! Where were those stoppers from!?!?!
|
I like the lamp base idea as well...... how would you make that!?!?
|
lamp base
I like the lamp base idea too -- can u drill a hole in glass?
|
For the plug?!!? Is that what you mean?
I'd be a bit scared!!!!! |
|
Thanks. :)
Do you think you could store olive oil in them with one of those stoppers in the top!? Surely it's not much different from having a screw lid, as long as the bottle is closed!?! |
I'd say it's not a problem.
