Old fire place

This was one of the most satisying jobs of restoration I've done!
You'll see the state of the range etc when we got the cottage!
We removed the range and the brick WALLPAPER behind.
The original fireplace had been blocked up, we removed all the blocks and the 6 foot plus of soot and dirt etc that was behind, and discovered the old red bricks were still there (sweet!) Although they were pretty blackened.
Many, many hours of scrubbing with a deck brush & an acid solution and rinsing etc with a power hose and we could finally see some red!
We cut an old railway sleeper in half and planed it and varnished it- to use as a mantle.
We had the base & tiles fitted & next we got the log burning stove fitted.
Wall plastered and painted & there ya go!
I absolutely love sitting in front of it now and light a fire all year round (it's needed all summer in Ireland as you all know!)

Wow, the railway sleeper is a great idea!! We are just removing our range to replace it with a stove and was trying to figure out how to make a nice mantelpiece.

Your fireplace is really lovely now, the hard work worth it.

p

Fair play to ya. Between this and the chairs I can't wait to see what else you've done. You guys make me feel so guilty that I can't do any of this stuff myself.

Well Done You!

What a beautiful job. Well done you. It must be deeply satisfying to just sit in front of that and say "I'm responsible for that!" - you should give workshops!!

Wow!

Hi Eily, i just wanted to comment to say how amazing your fire place looks! My mother and father moved into an old cottage about 2 years ago and the same thing was in there house with the brick hidden, when they were knocking the plaster off they discovered it, it goes the whole way up to the celing and why someone would want to hide it i just dont know! They have restored it too and it looks amazing like yours. I tried to post a pic but it was too big unfortunatly. :( Keep up the great work!

Hi Eily, what a great job. You must be delighted with the results of all your hard work. There is great satisfaction in saying' we did it ourselves a satisfaction that goes beyond saving time or money. Well done, Eibhlin.
