Can you varnish veneer?

I have an assortment of kitchen presses, three different types to be exact lol. My main presses are a kind of cherry wood..the others are light and dark pine.
My question is this...can I varnish them to look like the cherry ones? I'd really rather not go to the effort and expense of buying new doors if I can help it.

Hi Mandy, I varnished a wood veneer press that i had an it looked beautiful but didnt take long for the varnish to start coming off in little bits kind of like the top of a chip pan when it badly needs cleaning so i wouldnt reccomend it. But if you go into a good hardware or paint shop they should be able to reccomend a paint if you wanted to change the colour altogether as there seems to be a paint for everything now. Hope this has been of some help Lolo

Hi Mandy,

I'm really not sure about the varnish, I'd imagine it would peel off as Lorraine said. However I do know the paint and grain works as we did this for my Gran 6 years ago and it's still perfect. Hope this helps!

Best of luck,
colmsmum.

Or get them re-sprayed maybe? Any cabinet maker, or kitchen supplier could help with this, or just paint over all.. with as said Paint and Grain! Good luck with it!

hi mandy, i wouldnt recommend varnishing..cause it would peel.
try the hardwear store and see if they have any suggestions.
other than that ask around about someone to cover your odd presses to match the cherrywood ones.
apprently this is quite easy to get done.
you may find out in one of the places that make kitchens.

other than that, the paint and grain works a treat if you can get the right colour, but you would have to do all the presses to be sure they matched.
good luck with it.

varnishing veneer

Try a melamine primer -like ESP (I think it stands for Easy surface Preparation.)

I already tried to get paint and grain...apparently they don't sell it anymore... shame

paint

It can be difficult to get different woods to stain to the same colour. Maybe you could paint them all with a nice cream eggshell paint or whatever colour suits your decor
