problems with burnt wooden table
 

got a lovely wee table off a jumbletowner, the top has been badly burnt and the deep burn has eroded part of the top, any ideas to restore?
plane it down maybe?

Hi palminnie, is it a small burn like from cigarette? if so you might get away with sanding if you don't mind a little unevenness. If it is a larger area you might have to sand so much that you end up with a wafer thin table or with most of the original surface gone. Again you could sand the area and fill it with wood filler, followed by woodstain to match or else paint it to hide repair job. Another idea would be to cut a whole new top for the table and either replace old or add over it. I have done this with a couple of pieces...see repurposing old furniture in before and after section...probably on page 3 as I haven't posted in a while....wow I never thought I'd be a page 3 girl!!:0 Eibhlin.

hi there Eibhlinn, I have thought on this too, i think its a replace or add a thin top to this one already. there is evidence of woodworm but i think too old to be active. there was very heavy old vinyl on top.
it looks as if it may have been tipped into the fire by mistake and the result is flame marks to a corner and top.
i will look at the advice on the furniture you mention and many thanks

sticky vinyl on top
 

this table is so badly damaged on top with very very sticky old fashioned vinyl on top, will i have to take all of that off? can i give the whole think a lick of wood filler and then place the new wood on top?
then we can work on the legs!
oh thinking of putting glass/perspex on top, how does one fix this on?
all ideas welcomed.
