hungry birds

If you make a tent style frame with bamboo or 2x1 and attach netting which you can buy in gardening centres or euro shops on to it. then just pop it over your veggie plot, not only will it allow your crop to grow with ease, because of its shape, but the birds cant get close enough to pick at your crops. If clever enough to get technical a door way can be included for maintanence of your plot.

Call the macroom gun club. Pigeon can be shot outside season if causing damage to crops. :-0

bad birds

Is there an increase in the number of pigeons this year? We usually feed the birds with nuts and fatballs every year but this year, the ickle birds have been chased away by the bad pigeons - what's going on in nature this year?

bad birds!

similar to other advice, stick a few sticks(?) around the edge of the bed. Tie string from stick to stick, and hang old cds from the string. A good way of getting rid of those old Michael Bolton CDs too! Used this method myself, and it really works.

Many years ago I used to do the string thing too, but I used to string clean milk bottle tops on the strings and it did the job great because as well as bouncing around in the breeze, they also made a tinkling sound. Pity the old milk bottles are no more. But you could string up some strips of plastic shopping bags long enough to blow around a bit, also make your own milk bottle tops by using a few layers of silver foil. As final solution, make a scarecrow!

pigeons

Poor pigeons!! Why does no-one like pigeons! Saw a documentary on them and they are fairly amazing birds. They are just trying to make a living for themselves and their babies like the rest of us! That said, I can appreciate the frustration of growing cabbages and lettuces as they just love the hearts. Netting is the way to go, needs to be high and wide enough and sufficiently well secured with pegs to keep them at bay, that's what worked for me.
