Gadget for calculating energy usage

Hi everyone,

Just wondering would anyone know where i would get one of these gadgets. I remember seeing one advertised somewhere but cant remember where lol

It like a small portable gadget that could be placed against/on an electrical item and u could then see what it was costing u per hour of usage or something to that effect.

If these weren't expensive I would love to get one, they would be so handy

Hi jenniferalan,

I'd say that most electrical retailers sell these. You can also buy them online at Ecoshop (Greystones, Co Wicklow). Details at the bottom of the following page.

Hi Jennifer elan

Argos sell an energy monitor. It is called the Owl Wireless Energy Monitor and if you look in the index it is under the eco section (sorry, don't have a catalogue to hand) It cost about 70euro I think. You attach one part to your ESB box outside the house and a portable monitor inside lets you know what your energy usage is at any given time. i saw these on About the House with Duncan Stewart, and was eager to get one and was surprised to find Argos sold them. It has really opened our eyes to the amount of energy we were wasting!!

Thanks a million to all who applied. Betsy, I looked online and couldn't find any free ones in the UK unfortunately.

Thanks Chris for the link to the shop in Ireland and thanks to clutterbugk for telling me about the one in the Argos catalogue, going to look that one up on their website now.

Really hope to get one of these soon if I can find one that's around the 50euro bracket. We use such a huge amount of electricity in my house and we really need to find out where we can make improvements

You should be able to get one in Maplin for considerably less than €50.
They have a couple of varieties on their site, prices are quoted in sterling.
Call in to the the City centre one or the one in Blanch, their may be one on sale for 15 or so. I think that was about the price I saw them for a while back.

Just as an add-on. The difference between the monitor we got in argos and the cheaper ones in maplin are that the one in argos gives an energy usage for the whole house, whereas the ones that you plug the appliance into, only give a reading for that appliance. we found it really useful to know what effect lights, and heating etc that are not socket based, but actually use most electricity, were having on our energy usage. Things like leaving lights on, having heating turned up too high and leaving tvs etc on really add on to your bill. The monitor in argos shows at what cost per hour the house is running, so if it seems higher than normal, it prompts a scout around to find out what was left on!! We find it really useful.

Have just checked argos online and the monitor is now selling at 48.79 (considerably cheaper than last year!!).
