New Vegetable Garden (what/when to sow?)

hi all i want to start a vegetable garden this year,, i have my raised beds ready and waiting and my poly tunnel and glass house ready to go... what i dont know is what to sow and when to sow it... does everyting have to start from seed? im fairly new to all this but really want to do it... id like to sow a variety of stuff.. potatoes, garlic, carrots, peppers, cabbage, tomatoes, mushrooms, and more plus your basic summer veg like spring onions, lettuce, etc... any advice would be much appreciated...
Cheers.....x

new vegetable garden

Good for you Greenmag1,
I would recommend the site www.garden.ie as they have lots on all types of gardening including veg. I am starting my first early potatoes on a window sill at the moment- you just stand the potatoes in an old egg carton so that they start to sprout- a process called chitting (yes that is the name) This gives the potatoes a great start when it comes time to sow them, the type I am using are called orla. I am also starting to sow broad beans, runner beans and french beans in small pots in the greenhouse. I live in the Southeast and the further north you go the colder it is so you should delay sowing by about a week for the midlands and two weeks for the north. Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Veggies

If you want to grow Garlic you should be putting it in soon before the cold weather is gone.

www.seedaholic.com is an Irish mail order seed supplier with lots of detailed growing information for each variety they sell.

If you have access to B&Q they do a Vegetable Garden 12 Pack of seeds for about 6 euro.

If you have limited space then you should try to grow high value crops and experiment with varieties to find the ones you like. Also google Intercropping, Successional Sowing and Rotation.

Hope this helps :-)
