Unwanted Oak Leaves
 

Hi Folks,

Looking for some advice. We have old Irish Oaks bordering our property which is fantastic apart from the amount of leaves they lose during Autumn and Winter.

Every week I fill the compost bin with oak leaves and it doesn't even make a dent in what is left. Have tried putting these in black bags to breakdown ( it doesn't work by the way)

Anyone any clues as to how to get rid of them or is there any recycling point I can drop them off at. In Wexford.

If you have a corner of ground to spare, you can make them into a heap of their own and dampen them down slightly or add a small compost mix to them, they will eventually breakdown,as the worms get to it.and give you lovely compost you can keep adding just remember to turn it.Can be contained with lettuce wire fence.If youve a wormery all the better.In the bags it can take a couple of years to break down but if gathered and bagged when wet and with holes in the bags it seems to break down a bit quicker dont know why,this is just what i was taught.
IF all above fail you can bring them up to me...

i had the same problem with leaves too

i got 3 pallets from a local farmer,they are all spreading fertiliser now

make up a 3 sided box with the front open
if you can get plywood for across the front and line the side with something like old carpet or even old sheets

fill the leaves into it,as the level rises,put more plywood in front

the weight of the leaves will keep compacting the lower levels

you will have lovely rich compost next autumn

same problem, neighbours trees.

but for us all year round prob. at moment the trees are "drying" out and so clumps of moss falling off onto our drive. Our own tarmac is destroyed every year with moss growing as no light.

have beech shells that once housed the beech nuts, leaves, twigs, branches, pine needles etc. Hundreds of these seeds sprout everywhere.

i just gather up everything and peg them back into neighbours property (old estate type house that had a good secluded drive way into it). last christmas got so annoyed with the leaves that i pegged a huge pile just outside their enterance and owner spent lovely morning gathering them up into his wheelbarrow.............
