I don't know how good this method would work on your coffee table but I have used it to fill a gap in floorboards and it turned out pretty good.

Old Tights are great for filtering the lumps out of old paint. Stretch the tights over a clean container and pour the paint through it , you will end up with paint free from any lumps and bits .
