check out alpines on ur internet and books in ur local library.

B&Q do an alpine section for 5 plants for €7.
An alpine garden is ideally a gravel/rock garden area but they will thrive in a belfast sink if u could get ur hands on one. They are low spreading plants that mind themselves. some have beautiful flowers also. some self seed such as saxifage (check spelling) and houseleeks have bulb lets that you just cut off with a root and plant up.
