Oh this sounds like it could be the start of something great!
If you want something more eclectic- go for a colour on the unit doors, and even on the kitchen door. My parents have painted their kitchen cupboards lots of times: deep red, 50's blue, custard yellow, and now- white.

Something that seems very popular now is taking off some of the top unit doors, like in the kitchen in the link. Then you could even paint the shelves or back of the cupboard a contrasting colour, or even wallpaper the back.

I don't know about painting floor tiles, since they would have a lot of wear and tear, but google it!
You can paint wall tiles! I just googled paint wall tiles, and got loads of "how to" hits, so just look through a few of those sites to see which seems most thorough. I would be most worried about finding the right paint, I have had less than satisfying experiences when asking in Homebase and B&Q when I've needed advice on paint...
