funny enough WD40 is the answer for both!
I have found when I'm oiling door handles they come up really shiny anywhere the WD40 has been and if you have Hostas in a pot spraying it on the outside stops slugs crawling up to them.
If they are not in a pot put a band of copper wire around them. I have got it in Aldi before I think it was for welding. For extra protection as well as eggshells try ashes.
