crashing a van in hard times

complicated...i crashed the adapted van the other day...not a nice feeling. everything went, steering and brakes, even though i just had a garage say it was ok to take to the road that day, half an hour later i was either speaking to god or the ambulance men.
insurance is forking out E6.500 for a 08 renault kangoo.
madness.
i am uneasy of driving it again.
but i have little left to buy a new or even a good second hand one, so what options are there?
scrappage, that has gone eh?
i do get vrt and tax exempt so that should also lighten the load.
have the insurance job done and then trade in?
this is a very new area for me, i hope i visit it once and do not learn from the experience!
