Default JumbleTown: Did You Know?

Hi Everyone,

This "Did You Know" thread is a collection of JumbleTown hints and tips.

Did you know...

1. Clicking our logo always brings you back to our Home Page.

2. Instructions on how to send a PM (Private Message) can be found here: http://www.jumbletown.ie/forums/userguide/claimitem.htm

3. Instructions on how to indicate whether your item is Taken or Reserved, and how to Open/Close an item can be found here:
http://www.jumbletown.ie/forums/user...TakenItem.html

4. What is a 'thread' on JumbleTown?
A thread is any Ad/Post that has multiple replies to it.

5. Our Advanced Search page is here:
http://www.jumbletown.ie/forums/search.php? ...useful for searching through the Wanted section.

6. Our User Guide is here:
http://www.jumbletown.ie/forums/userguide/userguide.htm

7. If you can't attach a photo yourself (due to our file size restrictions), send it to us, and we'll upload it for you. Send photos here: photos@jumbletown.ie

Tip: If you have a particularly big file to send to JumbleTown (or indeed anywhere else), you should use a very handy website called yousend it.com
http://www.yousendit.com/

If you wish to edit your own photos, our guidelines and instructions may be found here:
http://www.jumbletown.ie/forums/user...ddingimage.htm

8. "Bump" is the standard term to indicate that you simply wish to move your post/ad to the top of the board. All new posts on a "thread" (a thread = the original post plus all responses) move the thread to the top of the board. Members are allowed to bump up their thread once a day.

9. Would you like to play your part in spreading the word about JumbleTown?
Why not put up an A4-sized JumbleTown poster in your place of work, local library, or community centre? The poster consists of a description of JumbleTown (half a page) and two images (JumbleTown's logo and the "Kitchener figure" as shown at the bottom of this post). Posters come in black & white or colour.

You can download a JumbleTown poster here: http://www.jumbletown.ie/posters.htm

10. The Northern Ireland Local Authorities can be found here:
http://www.jumbletown.ie/forums/NILA.html

11. Here's how to Search the Wanted Pages:
Simply click "Search this Forum" on the top right of the Wanted page. Type in a key word such as "sofa" or "computer" and press "Go". The Advanced Search tool is located there too. Why not try it now? View the Wanted Forum here: http://www.jumbletown.ie/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=32

12. Our Media Diary is here: http://www.jumbletown.ie/media2.htm

13. Contact Admin/Forum Leaders (Dave Hagan & Chris P) by clicking on "View Forum Leaders" beneath the "Wanted" forum at the bottom of the Home Page. You can contact JumbleTown HQ by clicking on "Contact Us", which is above the list of Local Authority Links at the bottom of the Home Page.

14. After you've made a post, you should refresh your page to get the most up-to-the-minute page-view. The refresh button is usually at the top left of your toolbar.

15. Good communications are key to the site's success.

Here are some tips:

(a) Givers should respond to a post or PM from a potential Taker within three days. Even if a Giver decides to use the PM system, s/he should update the Public Forum also. If there is no response on the Public Forum, then the item will be archived by Admin and will only be retrieved on request.

(b) If a Taker receives information from a Giver, the Taker should respond within three days. Otherwise, the Taker's expression of interest may be deleted and the Giver's ad bumped up the board by Admin. This is called "cleaning up" or "pruning" a post in order to ensure that an item goes as quickly as possible.

(c) Members should respond to all PMs (where practicable).

(d) Givers should try to keep Members up-to-date re: an item's status. If an item is Reserved or Taken, then it should be marked as such and locked/closed. A quick note on the Public Forum to this effect is also useful. Items that are Reserved for more than six days will be removed from the Public Forum unless they are updated by the Giver.

(e) When arranging for an item's collection, we recommend that Givers and Takers phone each other ONE HOUR before the agreed time. This is to confirm that the later appointment is still mutually convenient.

16. An OECD report in March 2006 stated that Ireland produces more waste per capita than any other developed nation in the world, including the USA. Every man, woman, and child in Ireland produces 760 kg of "waste" per year; the EU average is around 520kg per capita. Forfas, an Irish-government advisory board, reported in June 2006 that the waste picture in Ireland was even worse than that described in the OECD report - a whopping 777kg per capita. JumbleTown is trying to dispel the notion that the Irish are the biggest shower of wasters in the world!

More to come...
