corkboard mosaics- calling all crafters!

Calling all crafters - I want to make some pot stands using thick cork mats, tiles, shells and beads. I made one but am not happy with the grout finish on it. Any good ideas on how I could make some of these using the material I've mentioned? It's a project I want to do with a 'special needs' group, if they turn out well we will sell them to raise money for our craft materials. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Is the grout cracking? Is the corkboard flexible? Any movement will cause grout to crack. Any chance you could use pieces of MDF?
