FAT for the birds

anyone know where i can get fat to help me make fat balls, its too expensive for me in the shops, would i try mcdonalds or some of the other places, maybe they would willingly give me some on a regular basis?
suggestions will go a long way.
oh, i am not getting any of the very weeny birds like the blue tits etc, any birders out there tell me why and how do i encourage them in. apart from that its like a scene from hitchcock's 'The Birds' here with the starlings and magpies and wood pigeons and rooks, jackdaws and collared doves.
